How does the Vutro nutrition scanner work?

Point your camera at a product's barcode on the shelf. Vutro queries the Open Food Facts database — over 3 million referenced products — and displays in under a second the Nutri-Score, ingredient list, allergens, and processing level (NOVA).

Nutri-Score A→E Full ingredients Allergens detected NOVA score

This works just as well for a familiar product as for a new brand discovered on the shelf: as soon as a barcode exists in Open Food Facts, the product's nutritional history is available instantly, with no manual searching.

Why food labels are hard to read

A food label legally displays the nutrition table, an ingredient list ordered by decreasing weight, allergens in bold, and sometimes up to twenty additives listed as E-codes (E100, E211, E621…). Few people have the time or background knowledge to interpret this in the aisle: telling a harmless natural colorant from a more debated preservative takes research nobody does standing in front of a shelf.

Sugar content has the same problem: it's expressed in grams per 100g, with no simple visual cue for whether that's a lot or a little, and manufacturers are not required to flag "high sugar" on the front of the pack. A nutrition scanner automates this reading: in one scan, Vutro translates the nutrition table and ingredient list into directly usable information — Nutri-Score, NOVA processing score, and highlighted allergens — without you having to decode the label yourself.

Finding a cheaper alternative with the same Nutri-Score

What sets Vutro apart from other nutrition scanners: the app automatically compares the scanned product with equivalent store brands (MDD). You instantly see how much you can save without sacrificing nutritional quality.

Free, private data

Vutro is completely free. No data resale. Your scans stay on your device. The app is available on iPhone (iOS 15+) and Android (7.0+).

Used regularly, a nutrition scanner also becomes a tool to reduce your grocery budget without changing your habits: every lower-scoring product is a chance to discover a cheaper alternative that's at least as good.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vutro free?

Yes, completely free. No subscription, no hidden premium version.

Which products does the scanner recognize?

All products with an EAN-13 barcode listed in Open Food Facts — primarily food products sold in Europe.

Does Vutro work offline?

Previously scanned products are available offline, since Vutro keeps a local copy on your device. New products require an internet connection to fetch their data from Open Food Facts.

How accurate is the nutrition scanner?

Data comes from Open Food Facts, a collaborative database. Always check the physical label for allergies.

How do I know if an additive should be avoided?

Vutro displays the full list of detected additives on every scan. Some, like nitrites (E249-E252) or certain azo dyes, are flagged with caution by health authorities — the choice is yours; Vutro simply shows the information clearly instead of burying it in an unreadable table.
