← Back to homeUnderstanding Nutri-Score
Nutri-Score is an A-to-E rating that evaluates the nutritional quality of a product per 100g. The greener and closer to A, the better the product for your health.
Vutro uses Nutri-Score as its main filter for alternative suggestions: an alternative is only suggested if its Nutri-Score is equal or better than the original product. You'll never end up with a less healthy option.
This is especially useful when comparing similar products from the same aisle — cereals, ready meals, sauces, or snacks often show meaningful Nutri-Score gaps for a very similar price, and it's hard to spot that difference just by reading two packages side by side.
The limits of Nutri-Score on its own
Nutri-Score is a great quick reference, but it has limits. It's calculated per 100g or 100ml, which can disadvantage foods consumed in small portions (oils, cheeses) compared to sugary drinks consumed in large quantities. It doesn't account for the degree of industrial processing — that's the complementary role of the NOVA score — or the presence of specific additives, which still need checking in the ingredient list.
That's why Vutro displays Nutri-Score alongside the NOVA score and the full ingredient list on every scan, rather than reducing a product to a single letter. And Vutro's Smart Swaps go further than simple display: they automatically cross-reference the scanned product's Nutri-Score with store-brand prices to suggest an alternative with an equal or better score, often cheaper. You don't need to compare multiple packages on the shelf — Vutro does the work for you and shows the savings.

Frequently asked questions
Is Nutri-Score reliable?
Nutri-Score is an official system adopted by several European countries. It is calculated from the nutritional composition per 100g. Vutro uses it as provided by Open Food Facts, so its accuracy depends on the underlying data being correct and up to date.
Does Vutro show Nutri-Score for all products?
Only for products in Open Food Facts with a Nutri-Score listed. If the information is missing, it is not displayed.
Can I filter by Nutri-Score in Vutro?
Yes. In the Smart Swaps settings, you can choose to accept only alternatives with the same Nutri-Score grade, or also slightly lower grades if the saving is significant.
Is Nutri-Score alone enough to eat well?
Not on its own. Nutri-Score is a strong overall indicator, but it should be complemented by the NOVA score (degree of processing) and a look at the ingredient list, especially for allergies. Vutro shows all three together on every scan.
